Hillary Russell is a digital photographer exploring ideas of identity. This “Social Beauty” pushes the individual to expose an obscured identity. A tough barrier is created that appears to protect the individual but in reality, it forms a mask to their true self. This beauty mask acts as a layer to protect them. It fades the details and all that is left is a foggy outline of the individual’s identity. Those who wear the mask are viewed as desirable and those who chose to deny the mask are seen as lost or depressed. The subject matter throughout the series is nature including, trees, and other foliage. Nature acts as a symbol of the body.
